Having Your Teeth Whitened? Try Gum. | Northridge Dentist

459899307What about the teeth whitening process makes our mouths feel sensitive and how can we get it to stop? The remedy to this tooth sensitivity is as simple as popping a piece of chewing gum into your mouth.

Sensitive teeth are caused by the breakdown of tooth enamel. Receding gums are another way your teeth to become sensitive. Dentin exposure can cause your teeth to no longer have the protection our gums and tooth enamel provide, causing the pain. When we have our teeth whitened, we are polishing up that enamel. Worn enamel makes your teeth become increasingly prone to pain when drinking or eating certain foods.

A study was published in the British Dental Journal with three groups receiving in-office teeth whitening. The groups were as follows: patients without chewing gum, patients with sugar-free gum, and patients with sugar-free gum that also included Recaldent, a product that helps strengthen tooth enamel. After the procedure, those patients with gum were asked to begin chewing. Surprisingly enough, those that chewed on a piece of chewing gum had significantly less pain than the group that went without.

But why? Scientists have theorized that perhaps the increased saliva production gave the patient some type of relief. Or perhaps it was a case of “out of sight, out of mind”. What they did find is that the version of chewing gum didn’t make a difference, so make sure to pick up a pack of sugar-free gum on the way to your next teeth whitening appointment.

December 30th Is National Baking Soda Day | Northridge Dentist

480320367Sure. It seems like a silly thing to celebrate in general, much less give it a yearly celebratory day. But if you really think about it, baking soda has so many everyday uses, maybe we’ve been a bit too harsh deciding that it’s unworthy for a holiday. From cooking to cleaning to removing more stains than your typical stain cleaners, we have been using baking soda in our kitchens, baths and laundry rooms for ages. But there are also dental purposes for baking soda. And because of its whitening qualities, there are many uses for baking soda in our dental routines.

There are ways to stave off cravings while you’re watching your weight. And during this time of year, who isn’t? If you crave sweets, rinse your mouth with one-teaspoon baking soda dissolved in a glass of warm water. Don’t swallow the mixture; spit it out. Your craving should disappear instantly.

And of course, there is baking soda toothpaste. Toothpaste containing sodium bicarbonate has in several studies been shown to have a better whitening and plaque removal effect than toothpastes without it. Not only sold over-the-counter, baking soda toothpaste can be made at home by simply mixing a teaspoon of baking soda with some water until it turns into a paste. Apply it to your toothbrush and brush as usual. You will slowly notice that your teeth will become whiter as you continue to work it into your dental routines. Sodium bicarbonate is also used as an ingredient in some mouthwashes. It has anticaries and abrasive properties that work as a mechanical cleanser on the teeth and gums, neutralizing the production of acid in the mouth, and also acts as an antiseptic to help prevent infections.

But that’s not all. Soak toothbrushes in baking soda and warm water overnight to clean bristles. That’s right. We all know we need to change out our toothbrushes every few months, but it is really nice to know that our mouths can always have a clean brush if we just soak it while we sleep.

Teeth Whitening | Northridge Dentist

whitening small

There a multitude of ways in which a patient may choose to whiten their teeth. Some of these products include whitening toothpastes, over-the-counter gels, rinses, strips, trays, and whitening products attained from a dentist.

Keep in mind that teeth whitening is ideal for individuals who have healthy, unrestored teeth and gums. Here’s a list of whitening systems that should help you identify which one is good for you.

Whitening toothpastes

All toothpastes have the power to remove surface stains because they all contain mild abrasives. Some toothpastes contain gentle polishing agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. Whitening toothpastes can help remain surface stains, however don’t contain bleach and so do not have the most effective results right away.

Whitening Strips and Gels

Whitening gels are clear, peroxide based gels applied with a small brush directly to the surface of your teeth. The strength of the peroxide varies in each. Initial results are seen in a few days and final results are sustained for about four months.

Whitening strips are very thing, virtually invisible strips that are coated with a peroxide based whitening gel. They are usually applied twice daily for 30 minutes. These results are seen in a few days and are sustained for about four months.

In Office Bleaching

In office bleaching provides the quickest way to whiten teeth. With in-office bleaching, the product is applied directly to the teeth. These products can be used in combination with heat, a light, or a laser. Results are usually seen in one appointment, however, dramatic results are seen after several appointments.

The process of teeth whitening can be a long a strenuous one if you can’t find the time to do it. Here at Dr. Lunt’s dentist office, we understand that sometimes coming in to the dentist for a whitening session can be a little out of the way especially if you have a busy schedule. With that said, here are some at home remedies that may be able to help you temporarily whiten your teeth!

1.Everyday Household Products

  • Mix together toothpaste, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and half a teaspoon of water and you have just created your very own whitening toothpaste.

2. Banana Peels

  • Applying a banana peel to your teeth twice a day for about two minutes should help your teeth look healthier and whiter.

3.Strawberry and Baking Soda

  • The acids found in a strawberry work to polish and whiten your teeth

Teeth Whitening – Enhance Your Smile | Northridge, CA

teeth-whiteningTeeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.

Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.  The most popular method is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically.  Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc.  Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Tooth whitening is not permanent.  A touch-up may be needed every several years and more often if you smoke or drink coffee, tea, or wine.

Reasons for tooth whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

What does tooth whitening involve?

This type of tooth whitening usually requires two visits.  At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays.

At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary.  The trays are worn with special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks, depending on the degree of staining and desired level of tooth whitening.  It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.

You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and be encouraged to visit Dr. David Lunt regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.

To see what whitening can do for your smile, call Dr. David Lunt at (818) 885-7230 to schedule an appointment or visit our website.

Tobacco Use and Quitting! Northridge, Ca

Everyone knows smoking is bad for your health, so it comes with no surprise that cigarettes and chewing tobacco are harmful to your oral health as well. For one, tobacco products can cause bad breath, but that’s only the beginning…

Other possible oral health impacts of smoking and all tobacco products include:

  • stained teeth and tongue
  • dulled sense of taste and smellNo_smoking_symbol_svg
  • slow healing after a tooth extraction or other surgery
  • difficulties in correcting cosmetic dental problems
  • gum disease (gingivitis and periodontal disease)
  • oral cancer

As a Dental Hygienist, I am excited when I hear that one of my patients is trying to quit or has already quit smoking or chewing tobacco.  Quitting is the only way to decrease your risk of these oral health and other tobacco-related health problems. It is amazing the difference that I can see in my patients who are former smokers.  Their breath smells better, there is less staining, and their gums bleed less.  These improvements can and have been seen in just a matter of months!

The addictive quality of nicotine can make quitting especially difficult. That’s why it’s important to have a plan and a support network.  Be held accountable and tell people to help you stick to your plan. Write down your reasons for quitting and post it around the house and at work if you need daily reminders.  Not one person is the same, and therefore not everyone will use the same plan when trying to quit tobacco.  Find what works for you.  Exercising, chewing gum and keeping yourself busy can help you quit. You can also talk to your doctor to see if the medications available would help you to stop using tobacco.

Bottom line: Being tobacco-free is healthier for you and for those around you. Make a plan to quit, stick to it and start living a healthier life.

What To Expect From Teeth Whitening | Northridge, CA

restorativeHave you decided to have your teeth whitened? The first step is to be sure that your expectations are realistic.

It’s important not to expect a celebrity-bright smile, as everyone’s teeth react differently to the peroxide.

You may expect quicker whitening results if you opt for an in-office whitening procedure. These procedures are considered safe, though you can expect some sensitivity in your teeth and gums, which usually resolves after the whitening procedure is complete.  It is not uncommon for the tooth color to “rebound” a week or two following this type of treatment, so using an at-home product  may help maintain the results following the treatment.

With Dr. David Lunt you can expect to see some results after one treatment, but you may choose to have more than one treatment to get the effect that you want. An in-office bleaching treatment usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

How long can you expect the benefits to last? That depends in part on your habits. If you smoke, or if you drink large amounts of coffee or tea, you may need another procedure after a few years.

Don’t wait. Schedule your teeth whitening with Dr. David Lunt at (818) 885-7230 or visit our website.
