How to Keep Your Child’s Teeth Healthy | Northridge Dentist

It may sound like quite the chore, teaching proper dental hygiene to your little one, but it’s really easy to do. After all, the earlier you initiate a daily routine, the more likely your child will continue to have great check-ups.

As soon as the first teeth come in, begin brushing them with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and water.  If you are considering using toothpaste before your child’s second birthday, ask your dentist first.

To avoid baby bottle tooth decay and teeth misalignment due to sucking, try to wean your child off the breast and bottle by their first year and monitor excessive sucking of pacifiers and thumbs. Never give your child a bottle of milk, juice or sweetened liquid as a pacifier at naptime or bedtime. The sugars in the drink will sit in their mouths as your child sleeps, slowly causing dental issues.

Brushing at night is a great idea to start teaching good dental habits due to lower salivary flow and higher susceptibility to cavities. Perhaps let the child brush their teeth first to build self-confidence, then follow up to ensure that all plaque is removed. By about age five, your child should be able to brush his or her own teeth with proper parental instruction.

Which Should I Choose – Manual or Electric? | Northridge Dentist

ToothbrushWhat we know as the modern toothbrush is just one of those life necessities that is constantly evolving. But are these developments actually necessary? Do they negate the old-fashioned versions we have all gotten used to?

The purpose of the toothbrush is to clean your teeth – to remove plaque and other stimuli in our mouths that perpetuate the development of gum disease and tooth decay. Good news? Both the “old timey” manual and the “fancy schmancy” electric versions do that.

Things don’t get more basic than the design of the manual toothbrush. It’s light and stores easily so it’s definitely travel-friendly. And while the head of the brush now has variations in shapes and features, you still have to manually brush your teeth in a circular motion at a 45° angle. This may be an easy task for most of us, but there are some with dexterity issues that find it somewhat difficult. Conversely, the electronic toothbrush has much more weight to it because of the battery included. The downside to this is the fact that batteries die and need to be replaced. As for cost effectiveness, both will need to be replaced every few months, but replacing manual toothbrushes will easily fall within your budget.

When it all comes down to it, YOU are what decides how your oral health ends up. Brushing your teeth for 2-3 minutes daily, making sure every tooth gets some attention and keeping up your regular dental checkups will always be key to ensuring a lovely smile, whichever version of toothbrush you decide.

December 30th Is National Baking Soda Day | Northridge Dentist

480320367Sure. It seems like a silly thing to celebrate in general, much less give it a yearly celebratory day. But if you really think about it, baking soda has so many everyday uses, maybe we’ve been a bit too harsh deciding that it’s unworthy for a holiday. From cooking to cleaning to removing more stains than your typical stain cleaners, we have been using baking soda in our kitchens, baths and laundry rooms for ages. But there are also dental purposes for baking soda. And because of its whitening qualities, there are many uses for baking soda in our dental routines.

There are ways to stave off cravings while you’re watching your weight. And during this time of year, who isn’t? If you crave sweets, rinse your mouth with one-teaspoon baking soda dissolved in a glass of warm water. Don’t swallow the mixture; spit it out. Your craving should disappear instantly.

And of course, there is baking soda toothpaste. Toothpaste containing sodium bicarbonate has in several studies been shown to have a better whitening and plaque removal effect than toothpastes without it. Not only sold over-the-counter, baking soda toothpaste can be made at home by simply mixing a teaspoon of baking soda with some water until it turns into a paste. Apply it to your toothbrush and brush as usual. You will slowly notice that your teeth will become whiter as you continue to work it into your dental routines. Sodium bicarbonate is also used as an ingredient in some mouthwashes. It has anticaries and abrasive properties that work as a mechanical cleanser on the teeth and gums, neutralizing the production of acid in the mouth, and also acts as an antiseptic to help prevent infections.

But that’s not all. Soak toothbrushes in baking soda and warm water overnight to clean bristles. That’s right. We all know we need to change out our toothbrushes every few months, but it is really nice to know that our mouths can always have a clean brush if we just soak it while we sleep.

The Holidays and Your Teeth | Northridge Dentist

sb10066697t-001With all of the holiday parties and festivities comes all those goodies and sweets! Although it can be hard to limit ourselves to ‘just a few’, there are some things you can do to make sure you’re protecting your teeth. If your overall dental health is good and you practice good oral hygiene, you can probably safely indulge in some holiday treats as long as you do so in moderation. We did some research so you can enjoy the holiday season, treat yourself, but still keep that beautiful smile. Below are a few things to keep in mind…

  • Don’t eat constantly throughout the day. Waiting a couple hours between eating will allow saliva to neutralize acid and repair tooth enamel.
  • Try to avoid sticky treats (taffy), extremely hard (peanut brittle),  or chewy (caramel). These types of treats can break your teeth, pull out fillings and interfere with crowns.
  • If available, stick to soft treats, ones that melt in your mouth (peanut butter cups, chocolate kisses, thinly sliced fruit, etc.), and brush and floss after eating them.  A teeth-whitening toothpaste wouldn’t hurt if you’re indulging in lots of caffeinated beverages.
  • If you can, sip with a straw, it can help minimize the acids direct contact with your teeth.
  • Once you finish your holiday cocktail, keep yourself from chewing on the ice, it can damage the tooth enamel (as well as braces).
  • Don’t always ‘rush to brush’…brushing your teeth immediately after eating highly acidic foods can accelerate acid wear. Wait an hour or so before brushing to let some of the acid wear off. You may also want to consider a specially formulated, low-abrasion toothpaste that helps re-harden enamel.
  • Try chewing sugar-free gum following a meal, it can activate saliva and help wash away debris.
  • Swish water around in your mouth for 15-20 seconds after eating anything acidic. You can stop the acid attack on your teeth and stimulate the production of saliva, nature’s original neutralizer, works better than mouthwash because it won’t dry out your mouth.

We know the holiday season can be a crazy and stressful time. Make sure that you’re eating healthy, exercising and taking care of yourself…it’s amazing what stress can do to your body. Also, make sure to keep up on your 6 month cleanings. Your teeth, and your mouth, will thank you.

Parents Giving Children Piggyback Ride On Walk In WoodsNow that we are smack dab in the middle of Autumn, I think that it’s time to talk about one of our mouth’s very best friends – the apple. Autumn is apple season and it is key to many of our autumnal celebrations. The kiddies are back to school; you send them with an apple for the teacher. The leaves change from bright, vivid greens to more rust-like, “apple-y” colorations. It is getting chilly and it’s time to break out the cinnamon sticks for our apple cider. Yes, ‘tis the season of the apple and we are here to help you celebrate this tooth-friendly food properly.

Apples aren’t only a fruit used to sweet talk the teachers or keep away the doctors. They also help keep our smiles strong and bright. Apples are naturally full of vitamins A and C, key to keeping our gums nice and healthy. There is also a small amount of acid in the apple that acts as an astringent on your teeth when you bite into it. Just make sure to keep the peel on the apple. It needs the crunchiness of the skin to help clean your teeth. And that is why they are also known as nature’s toothbrush. When you crunch into this delicious fruit, you are releasing an ambush on the bacteria in your mouth plotting your future cavities. As it scrubs your teeth as you chew, the juiciness of the apple causes you to produce saliva. That saliva is your mouth’s natural defense against cavity-causing bacteria. The more saliva you have going on, the less chance the bacteria has to bury itself in your mouth, wreaking havoc on your mouth.

Apples are just good for us, but they also keep an eye on our snacking habits. There is a snacking theory I recently heard that really clicked for me: if you feel like snacking but don’t want an apple, you are just bored. And when I actually thought about it, it’s completely true. An apple is an ideal snack. The fiber makes me fuller than something bad for me, and will have less sugar (and calories) than what I would snack on I had a choice. The apple is not only making me healthy, but also thinner. That’s a snack I can get behind!

Just because the apple is now our favorite go-to snack, please remember that these sweet fruits do have sugar content, so be sure to brush afterwards to make sure you get rid of the loosened plaque left behind by your apple. If you don’t have a toothbrush handy, do a quick rinse with some water. The more your mouth is rinsed, the less chance that plaque can become re-attached to your teeth.

So stock up on those amazing apples. Not only are they great at keeping us healthy, they are also great in lots of healthy autumnal recipes!

It’s back to school time, the time of year we not only prepare our children to expand their minds, but it’s also time to find out the results of all that summer fun on their teeth. Sugary sweets were running rampant and its target is your child’s teeth. So how does one keep an eye on the oral health of a little human during this time of year? It takes some time and motivation, but it can be done.

Before they start the school year, it’s a great idea to take some time to visit your dental professional to make sure everything is kosher as they start a new school  year. But if you insist, opt for a singular snack they have to eat at once, like a fun-size candy bar. When it comes to snacks, there are loads of options that not only taste yummy, but also help fight against cavity-causing bacteria. The act of chewing automatically produces saliva production, so handy snacks like popcorn or pretzels are great options when you just want to have something to nosh on. They may not love them the most, but fruits and veggies with high water content, like pears and celery sticks, are also great at keeping their little mouth’s healthy. Protein is also excellent at getting rid of the acids in your mouth so pack turkey sandwiches, cheese & nuts to your heart’s content. There are so many tasty options to divert their attention away from the junk food, at least for a moment. They are still kids!

When you break it down, it all comes down to balance. You don’t want to deprive yourself and your family of the magical food delights, but you also don’t want to deal with a ton of dental bills. So start the school year off right by making sure you are trading some healthy options into your family’s lunchboxes. There is too much of a good thing, so take the time and read the labels. The Ins & Outs of Dental Floss | Northridge Dentist

As important as oral health is to our overall well-being, we really have a lax stance on participating to our fullest potential. One of the least favorite of these little dental chores is flossing. Not only did a survey conducted by the American Dental Association revealed that more adult would rather do something they find awful than floss, but the amount of times they floss is the biggest lie dentists hear on a day-to-day basis. But why do we find it so similar to our own daily torture? It’s the forgotten hygiene. Either we’re too busy or we are too lazy, but flossing has become the “Do I haveta?” of the dental world. And unfortunately, flossing is much more important than we think.

Flossing is merely the act of wrapping a piece of string around your teeth, one by one, in order to remove any bacteria and excess material stuck between each tooth. In its conception, floss was made from strands of silk (fancy!), but nowadays it comes from thin filament cord. There are varying thicknesses and varieties to choose from, depending on preference. Some are waxed, some are electric or water-based. There are also handy tools available on the market that help facilitate you in flossing properly, whether you need help reaching all of your teeth or working your way around complicated dental work, like braces. So no matter your reason for avoiding the floss, it isn’t a good one.

Even the process itself is relatively simple. Cut yourself a piece of floss about 18 inches long. Wrap both sides around your fingers until you have a good two inches separating either side. Pull it taut between your thumb and index finger and guide the floss in between each tooth. With a downward zigzag motion, slide the floss around each tooth in a curved motion, reminiscent to a shoe shine fella’s rag. What you’re trying to do is gently scrub down all the space between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach.

Now beyond that, there aren’t a whole lot of rules. Use a new area of floss for every tooth, don’t snap or flick the floss between your teeth (it isn’t good for your teeth and it’s gross), and always use a new piece each time you floss. No particular order necessary to do it right. Work from top to bottom or vice versa. Floss before you brush your teeth or after. You just want to get the cleanest mouth you possibly can each time you clean those pearly whites so that bacteria can’t glom onto your teeth and give you cavities or some other kind of gum disease while you aren’t looking. Preventative measures lead to fewer emergency dental visits.

It’s that time of year again! With the New Year in full swing, it’s time to start taking part in actually making sure your new year’s resolutions actually happen. Here at David Lunt’s dental office, we have come up with the perfect Dental Resolutions for you to make sure your teeth stay strong in 2015!

  • Floss regularly.  If you never floss, start now.  Floss occasionally?  Make it part of your daily routine. Flossing is an essential part of good oral care and it is never too late to start.
  • Whiten your teeth.  If your teeth have become dull or discolored, a whitening process will do wonders for your confidence.
  • Address any outstanding issues.  Even if you are fastidious about oral care, you may have one particular issue, big or small, that just bothers you.  It may be a chip or crack in your tooth, a gap between two of your teeth, an old filling, bad breath, or something else.
  • Go to the dentist regularly.  This is very important and it will benefit your teeth – and your overall health – in so many ways.  Think of it as a gift to yourself.
  • Eat healthier overall.  Even if you do not indulge in a lot of sugary foods throughout the day, your diet may not be healthy.  Keep a food diary for a week or two so you can really examine your eating habits and find the deficiencies.  You may realize that your diet is woefully inadequate when it comes to vegetables; that is a good starting point so you can begin eating better.
  • Help kids achieve better oral care.  With children, oral habits can slip; monitor them carefully and offer a refresher course when needed.  Remember that small incentives, such as a fun toothbrush or flavored toothpaste, can do wonders when it comes to getting kids to brush.
  • Use mouthwash.
  • Smile more!  It’s contagious! Your smile is unique to you; share it with family, friends, and everyone around you.
