In order to maintain ideal oral hygiene, Dr. Lunt emphasized the importance of flossing because it prevents the buildup of bacteria which can lead to gum disease and other oral predicaments. The number one excuse patients use to justify the lack of flossing is due to the fact that individuals are unaware of the proper techniques to floss. For this reason, Dr. Lunt encourages the following flossing tips for all of his patients who want to improve their oral hygiene:
- Procure about 18 inches of floss and wrap most of it around one middle finger and the rest around the other middle finger.
- Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers and use a gentle motion to guide the floss between your teeth.
- Then, make a C-motion along the teeth to remove any plaque or food particles.
- Make sure that you are moving the floss up and down against your tooth.
- Repeat the process until all of your teeth have been thoroughly flossed.
